20 sure ways of being just another sad and mediocre business woman (2 of 4)

6. Poor professional image

There is a huge difference between the reasonable feminist choice of burning the corsets and not caring for your branding. Remember what one of the greatest role models of female business success said: “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress. Dress impeccably and they remember the woman.” This was Coco Chanel, who built a gigantic empire freeing woman from their corsets.

Your career is your business. So, there’s no way around it, you must build a personal brand. Your clothes and your hair are part of your non-verbal communication. Remember that 93% (55% body language and 38% tone of voice) of what people will remember of your message is nonverbal.

7. Distrust other women

Bullying among women in the workplace is rampant. It seems that the company is a mythical “most eligible bachelor” and all women compete for his affections. They must distrust one another, because they are hunting for the same prey. A sense of lack of trust and competition brews in many organizations.

All bullies become so because of fear. When we remember that and are able to see their fragility, we step above the situation. We are no longer vulnerable. The victim becomes the powerful one. With this compassion you can disarm any nasty girl.

Could it be possible that you are the mean girl? Do you criticize other women - even just in your mind also counts?

The African wisdom applies to us as gender: it takes a village. How could we change our standing in society and in business if we don't support each other? if we sabotage each other?

Start with your own behavior. Use words of support. Think that we are all learning. Remain the powerful one.

8. Never Negotiate

According to a new survey by Glassdoor, American men are three times more likely to be successful in talking themselves into a higher salary than women are.  The key reason is that we don’t even try. When being hired 70% of women just accept the first offer. However, another research, from the Tel Aviv University, when they are trained on negotiation, they can actually outperform men.

Take action. Don't wait until this training falls on your lap. Learn negotiation and enjoy its rewards.

9. Failing to Delegate - Not Asking for Help

This is another face of our desire for perfection. We don’t delegate because no one would ever do it remotely as good as ourselves. No wonder my husband stopped washing the dishes.
Another reason why we don’t delegate is the “Impostor Syndrome”.  If the person who you delegated to does a great job, we would be found out. Then everyone would know how inadequate we are.  If you don’t know, own it and offer to investigate the answer.

One's philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes. In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility” ― Eleanor Roosevelt

10. Expecting "them" to pay you your worth

A “good girl” doesn’t talk about money. You are a good girl, aren’t you?

  • I did an excellent job. It’s apparent to the entire world. My customers/employer sees it too, so they’ll pay what I'm worth.

These thoughts prevent many women from asking for the money that their customers owe them. You are not here to be good. You are here to be effective. You are not here to long for praise. This was a business transaction. They need to honor the side of the deal. Go and ask for your money.

So, why do we women do these?

Simply put, because our inherited and persistent mental programming.

Can we change it?

YES!

Where is the book to fix this?

It doesn't exit!

To make this change we need to go beyond our conscious mind. This is very challenging for every business woman, as your intelligent conscious mind will trick you and keep you in the prison of your old mental patterns. We need to take a different approach, one that it’s more raw and feminine.
